Coastal Resources Commission :: Actions from October Meeting

At its Oct. 2011 meeting, the CRC:

  • Granted a variance to Stephen Holland of Pender County, who sought a variance from the CRC’s 30-foot buffer rule for the Public Trust Shoreline AEC in order to construct additions to an existing restaurant in Burgaw, to include a covered and elevated porch, uncovered deck and wood-slatted walkway. An innovative, engineered storm water management system must be included on the site as a condition of the variance.

  • Granted a variance to Highland Shores Community Services Assoc. Inc. of Brunswick County, who sought relief from the commission’s ¼-width limitation on pier lengths in order to extend and reconfigure an existing 30-slip docking facility.

  • Denied a variance to Carolina Marina & Yacht Club LLC of New Hanover County, who sought relief from the commission’s ¼-width limitation on pier lengths in order to extend an already-permitted but largely unconstructed marina.

  • Granted a variance to Steven and Cathy Casey of Carolina Beach, who sought relief from the commission’s 30-foot buffer rule in order to construct a single-family residence on their property in Carolina Beach. An innovative, engineered storm water management system must be included on the site as a condition of the variance.

  • Approved for public hearing amendments to 15A NCAC 7H.0308 (a)(2) and 15A NCAC 7H .1705 Temporary Erosion Control Structures, which would extend the time limit for sandbag structures from 5 to 8 years if the structure is located in a community actively pursuing beach nourishment or inlet relocation; and also removes the one-time only restriction for sandbags provided the property becomes imminently threatened again, and is located in a community that is actively pursuing beach nourishment or inlet relocation.

  • Approved the Fiscal Analysis for 15A NCAC 7H .0308(a)(2) & 15A NCAC 7H .1705 Temporary Erosion Control Structures.
