1. What is NOT a way bald cypress trees are adapted to live in swamps?

They have a thick, waxy coat on their leaves that keeps water from getting into the plant tissues.

They have buttress trunks that help hold the trees up in the soggy soil.

They have special roots called knees that stick up out of the water.  The knees may help hold tree up and provide air to the roots.

2. What is NOT a way that swamp forests and other wetlands clean water?

The plants in wetlands take up and use nutrients in the water.

Broken down plant matter in the swamp reacts with pollutants to make them less harmful.

Water slows down when it gets to a wetland.  This lets sediment and other heavy pollutants settle out of the water.

3. What is TRUE about the animals that live in swamp forests?

Swamp forests are good nesting areas for sea turtles.

No snakes can live in swamp forests because the water is so deep.

The detritus in riverine swamps is food for crayfish, clams, snails, and freshwater shrimp.
