Bald Head Island Conservancy - This non-profit land conservancy runs educational programs on Bald Head Island, including programs for school groups.  Teachers can work with the education coordinator to set up programs focused on barrier island geology, barrier island ecosystems, beachcombing biology, sea turtle biology and conservation, and coastal birds.

Bald Head Woods National Estuarine Research Reserve - This Coastal Reserve site contains some of the most mature examples of coastal island maritime forest in the state, including extremely old live oak and laurel oak trees.  A well-marked interpretive trail allows for easy access to the different habitats within the Reserve.

Carolina Beach State Park - This State preserve located along the shores of the Cape Fear River is home to the endangered Venus Flytrap

Fort Fisher State Historic Site - Tour the remains of the fort and learn more about southeastern North Carolina's role in the Civil War.

Jones Lake State Park - A small Carolina Bay lake with typical pocosin vegetation

Jordan Lake State Recreation Area - Look for nesting Bald Eagles from the observation deck at the north end of the lake

Lake Waccamaw State Park - This lake is the largest Carolina Bay in North Carolina and home to many unique species.  While much of the shoreline is developed, the state park has two educational boardwalks that showcase the transition between the sand ridge, pocosin, and marsh communities characteristic of Carolina Bay lakes.

North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher - Includes exhibits related to sea turtles and Carolina Bays.  School group visits need to be arranged at least two weeks in advance, and can include special live animal presentations and field trip experiences.

Singletary Lake State Park - Another Carolina Bay lake with characteristic pocosin and sand rim communities, including a variety of carnivorous plants.

Zeke's Island National Estuarine Research Reserve - A lagoon-like complex of islands north of Bald Head Island, which provides extensive marsh and tidal flat habitat in addition of shrub thicket, maritime forest, sand dune, ocean beach, and rock surface habitats.  The tidal flats in the vicinity of Zeke's island are the single most important shorebird habitat in southeastern NC.
